Biography

David Maurer (1875 Lithuania - 24 March 1964 Cape Town, South Africa) joined the Northern Rhodesian Forces during World War Two and was placed in charge of an explosives dump.

He was a tailor from Johannesburg and was in his mid- sixties when he enlisted. He claimed to be the "Father" of the Army as he had served with Brabant's Horse in the South Africa War, and with the South African Infantry in France in World War One. "I have taken part in every major war during my lifetime" he said, "but I hope I will be too old for the next one". He was a bachelor and died at the Cape Jewish Aged Home, Cape Town, aged 89 years, in 1964.
