Biography

Cyril Egnal (19 July 1920 Johannesburg, South Africa - October 2019 Toronto, Canada) South African Air Force, seconded to RAF, was the son of Michael Egnal (1875-1932) and Katie Sarah Egnal born Ingel (1879-1941) of Johannesburg. He was educated at Jeppe High School.

During World War Two, he served within the South African Air Force and was seconded to the Royal Air Force, serving in the Middle East, India and Burma. His older brother Corporal Alec Hyman Egnal (1918 - 1945) was killed in an aircraft accident in Khartoum, Sudan.

He married Helen Celene Guinsberg (1914-1991) in October 1946 and they had two children. He lived in Johannesburg. He was an accountant and Director of Companies. He testified at the Rivonia Trial - the State versus Nelson Mandela and Others in 1964 as he was the auditor for Ruron (Pty) Ltd who was owned by Julius First and his wife Matilda Levetan,founding members of the Communist Party of South Africa (CPSA).Their daughter was Ruth Slovo, wife of Advocate Joe Slovo.
