Biography

Norman Edelstein (2 July 1906 Kimberley, South Africa - 6 July 1977 Benoni, South Africa) Union Defence Force , was the son of Charles Edelstein (1875-1946) and Elsa Edelstein born Hirschberg (1885-1956). He was educated at Christian Brothers' College, Kimberley and Grey College, Bloemfontein. He was an attorney. He married Norma Sidler (1913- 1981) on the 21 July 1951 and they lived in Benoni. He was a member of the South African Jewish Ex-Service League.

During World War Two, he enlisted with the 2nd Battalion, Witwatersrand Rifles on the 23rd October 1939. He served with the 1st Division in North Africa and with the 6th South African Armoured Division in Italy. He was demobbed on the 7 November 1945 with the rank of Warrant Officer II. He was mentioned in Despatches. His brother Alfred Edelstein (1912-1985) also served in the Union Defence Force.
