Biography

Dr Wilhelm (Willi) Henry Arndt (11 July 1909 Kattowitz, Silesia, Germany (Katowice Poland) - 9 June 1993 Windhoek Namibia), South African Air Force.
He was born in Kattowitz, Silesia and was the son of Wilhelm Heinrich Arndt. He studied law at the Universities of Breslau, Germany and Aix-en-Provence, France. He left Nazi Germany in 1937 for South West Africa where he was able to marry his sweetheart, Eva Brauer (1916-2011). They had met in the Silesian town of Oppeln where the laws of the Third Reich forbade their marrying, despite Willie having joined the Lutheran Church. They arrived in Walvis Bay, South West Africa, travelled to Swakopmund and married a day later. From Swakopmund they made their way north- east to Kalkfeld where Willi found employment as a bookkeeper. They had three children. In 1938 the couple moved to Windhoek where Willi worked for Sam Cohen.
With the outbreak of World War Two in September 1939, Willi joined the South African Air Force, trained as a navigator and saw action in Tobruk, Tripoli and Brindisi, Italy.
Following his demobilization in 1945 Willi returned to Windhoek. He was a businessman and owned B. Grundleger (Pty) Ltd. The couple retired to live in Swakopmund. Willi died in Windhoek in 1993 and is buried next to his wife in the Swakopmund Memorial Peace Park Cemetery.
