Benjamin Aaron Abramowitz

Benjamin Aaron Abramowitz (15 August 1915 Peddie, Eastern Cape, South Africa – 11 February 2009 Johannesburg, South Africa) known as Barney,  was the son of Harris Abramowitz (1876-1961) and Sonia Abramowitz born Mereine (1880-1966).

He married Cecile Frances Karstaedt (1919-2006) in Queenstown in 1943 and they had 5 children.

During World War Two he enlisted in the Union Defence Force and served in the South African Air Force. He was a communication’s operator in the Flight Training School. He was stationed at various locations including Tempe, Bloemfontein and No. 43 Air School, Port Alfred.  His friend, Pilot Officer Hymie Batzophin was shot down during an operation in September 1941 after taking off from Fuka  airfield, Egypt.
