Biography

Jacob Isaac Sachs (25 June 1915 Transvaal South Africa - 7 May 1957 Johannesburg, South Africa) service number V251285 South African Engineering Corps, known as Jack, was the son of Morris Samuel Sachs (1881-1931) and Bertha Gertie Sachs nee Goldblatt (1885-1971) of Johannesburg. 

During World War Two he joined the Union Defence Force. He was attested in May 1940 and was a Sapper in the 5th Field Coy. S.A.E.C. He was sent 'up North' to Egypt. He was promoted to the rank of Captain, Administrative Officer for the Pay Corps in the M.E.F. He was demobilized in 1945. 

He joined the Springbok Legion in April 1944 and was elected chairman of the Legion in 1951. He married Hessie Margolis (1922-2017) on the 1st May 1946 in Johannesburg. At that time, he was a manufacturer. His wife was a social worker and was actively associated with the Springbok Legion. She served as a Welfare officer in the Johannesburg offices. They had 2 children and lived in Johannesburg. Jack died at the age of 41 from cancer. Following his death, his widow moved to London. Jack's younger sister Phyllis Miriam Altman (1919-1999) was an anti-apartheid activist who left South Arica in 1964 and settled in London.
