Biography

Theodore Blumberg (11 October 1918 Cape Town, South Africa - 15 October 2009 East London, South Africa) known as Theo, was the son of Herman Blumberg (1879-1971) and Tillie Blumberg nee Joffe (1888-1918) of Cape Town. He was a day old when his mother died of the Spanish Flu. Following his birth, he was looked after by an aunt and was subsequently sent to Lady Buxton Home. In 1922, following his father's marriage to Johanna (Anny) Sher (1892-1972) from Hamburg, Germany, he returned to the care of his father and stepmother.

During World War Two, he volunteered in the Union Defence Force. Whilst on active duty, he married Reina Edelstein (1918-2007) in 1942 in East London. At that time, he was stationed in East London.

His older brothers, Gordon Blumberg (1908-1996) and Max Blumberg (1913-1942) served in the U.D.F. Max died while on active service. The Blumberg's had three children and the family lived in East London In 1964 Theodore set up the Theodore Blumberg Clinic in East London for deaf children.
