Biography

Edward Abramowitz (1918 Transvaal, South Africa -18 November 2008 Johannesburg, South Africa) South African Medical Corps, known as Teddy, was the son of Adolf Abramowitz (1880-1958) and Lily Abramowitz born Lewis (1889-1939) of Johannesburg. In 1948 he changed his surname from Abramowitz to Abro.
He graduated as a doctor in 1942 at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg and volunteered in the Union Defence Force. He served with the South African Medical Corps and his rank was Captain. Whilst on active service, he married Estella Kotzen (1921-2009) on the 20 June 1943 in Johannesburg. He served 'Up North' in both Egypt and Palestine. His daughter kept some of his military passes, and other documents. One was a letter/circular given to the troops when they were allowed a pass into Jerusalem, containing a map of Old Jerusalem, as well as do's and don'ts when visiting the area.
After the war, in 1948 he changed his surname from Abramowitz to Abro and practiced as Dr E Abro. In 1955, he received the Master of Surgery at the University of the Witwatersrand. He was a urologist and a member of the British Association of Urological Surgeons. He died in Johannesburg and was survived by his wife and two children.
