Biography

Harry Abramson (2 June 1918 Orange Free State, South Africa - 26 May 1999 Durban, South Africa) service number 2376 2nd Royal Durban Light Infantry, was the son of Samuel Abramson (1876-1951) and Jane Abramson nee Berger (1888-1957) of Durban. During World War Two he and his brother Bennie Abramson (1916-1986) enlisted in the Union Defence Force. He enlisted on the 15 May 1940 and was a private. He and Bennie were sent 'up North' as part of the South African 2nd Infantry Division and were taken prisoner of war at the fall of Tobruk. They were sent to Italy and interned at Campo 65, Gravina and then at Campo 103 Treviso. Campo 103 was a subsection of the Monigo concentration camp which was housed in a suburban military barracks and accommodated a few hundred South African and New Zealand PoWs captured at the fall of Tobruk in June 1941. The brothers were then sent to Campo 82, Laterina. Following the Italian Armistice, they were captured by the German Army. They were sent to Germany and interned at Stalag IV B Mühlberg and then at Stalag IV C Wistritz Sudetenland. They were sent to the working detachment Tschausch III Brux Czechoslovakia where he was a labourer on the mine. His German Pow number was 223448. He married Florence Frances Naude nee Main (1925-2016) on the 23 June 1948 in Durban. The family lived in Durban.
