Biography

Edward Abramowitz (1 April 1923 Transvaal, South Africa - 2 January 2006 Johannesburg, South Africa) service number 26435 1st Imperial Light Horse Regiment, was the son of David Abramowitz (1893-1947) and Mussa Bertha Abramowitz nee Posner (1899-1934) of Johannesburg.

During World War Two he enlisted in the Union Defence Force on the 10th June 1940. He was a private. He was sent 'up North'. During the 8th Army retreat, he escaped the rearguard at Gazala but was taken prisoner of war at the fall of Tobruk on the 21st June 1942. He was sent to Italy. He was interned at Campo 66 Capua and Campo 82 Laterina. Following the Italian Armistice he was captured by the German Army. He was interned at Stalag IV B Mühlberg and Stalag IV C Kolombus / Brux where he worked doing coal mining from October 1943 to May 1945.
