He was born in Piraeus, Greece. After the Cassibile Armistice in September 1943, the Germans took full control of Athens, and the Jews realized that they planned to impose deportation measures immediately, as they had already done to the Jews of Northern Greece. So at the age of 21, he escaped by boat from Evia, Greece, to Turkey and was transferred to Palestine, where he joined the Greek Army. After the end of the war, he returned to Greece.
