Biography

S/Sgt Evensky had a secure safe position, but he wanted to fight to help save his people - the Jews. He was cleared to go to the European Theatre. He was assigned to the 175th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division. On 13 June, his unit was assigned to hold a bridge south of the Normandy Landing Zone. The unit stalled the Germans, but ran out of ammunition. They surrendered. S/Sgt Evensky and another Jewish soldier, T/Sgt Robert Cohen were taken to a nearby barn where the Gestapo had set up an office. They were taken behind the barn and shot dead. Neither soldier's remains were ever found. S/Sgt Evensky's name is on a memorial wall in the cemetary at Colleville-Sur-Mer, France. Source - US Army official report of death investigation
